As NFL teams head to training camp next week, here are five of the most interesting storylines worth following for the 2025 season:
5. Can Philadelphia repeat?
For a team that just won the Super Bowl, Philadelphia flew mostly under the radar this off-season. They lost some key pieces on defense, but return the nucleus of a team that dominated the league for much of last year. Philly closed the season on a 14-1 run with their only loss in a game Jalen Hurts barely played. Yet few seem to believe they can do it again. Will the Eagles silence their doubters?
4. What will the Aaron Rodgers experiment look like in Pittsburgh?
Rodgers was a terrible fit with the Jets last season, as he clashed with head coach Robert Saleh and added dysfunction to an already unstable organization. In Pittsburgh, he’ll play for a coach he respects in Mike Tomlin, and an organization with a much stronger locker room. The Steelers loaded up on veterans to make a playoff run, but it will hinge on Rodgers to lead it. Does he have enough in the tank to engineer Pittsburgh’s first playoff win since 2016?
3. Are the 49ers back?
San Francisco has been listed as both underrated and overrated by pundits heading into the season. They had a great run from 2019-2023, making four conference championship games and two Super Bowls. But last season, amid injuries and organizational turmoil, they stumbled to 6-11. The Niners signed several stars to contract extensions this off-season, and were drama-free heading to training camp until receiver Juwan Jennings demanded a contract extension or a trade last week. Is San Francisco back, or is the Jennings situation a sign of more trouble to come?
2. Can Jayden Daniels build on his Rookie of the Year campaign from 2024?
A recent poll of NFL scouts, coaches and executives listed Daniels as the fifth-best quarterback in the NFL right now, ahead of names such as Matthew Stafford, Justin Hebert and Jalen Hurts. That’s high praise for someone with just one season of experience. The challenge for Daniels will be to do it again in 2025. We’ve seen talented quarterbacks regress in their second season — CJ Stroud in Houston, Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville — so the question surrounding Daniels is this: will the league catch up this year, or is Daniels truly elite?
1. Will Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson finally get to the Super Bowl?
Allen and Jackson have won the past two MVP awards, and are two of the best regular season quarterbacks of this century. But neither has been able to produce a Super Bowl run. Jackson’s numbers dip come January, and Allen can’t get past the Chiefs, having lost four times in the past six post-seasons to Patrick Mahomes and friends. If either is to be considered an all-time quarterback, a Super Bowl appearance is mandatory. Is 2025 the year one of them breaks through?
