Texans Add Safety Jalen Mills For Secondary Depth
Just one week after their new star safety, CJ Gardner-Johnson, went down with a knee injury, the Houston Texans added more depth at the position.
On Sunday morning, Houston signed safety Jalen Mills, according to his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.
Gardner-Johnson’s injury isn’t as serious as the Texans feared, and there is a chance that he could play week one against the LA Rams.
Despite that, the Texans felt they still needed some depth in the secondary amidst the injury and the arrest of veteran safety Jimmy Ward.
Mills will play his tenth season in the NFL after being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 7th round of the 2016 draft out of LSU.
In 2017, Mills played 15 games, snagging three interceptions for an Eagles team that went on to win the Super Bowl.
Following five years with the Eagles, Mills joined the New England Patriots, playing three seasons and grabbing three interceptions.
Mills spent last season with the New York Jets, where he played just eight games, recording 44 tackles and an interception.
If Gardner-Johnson can’t play week one, Mills will likely see some snaps at safety along with fourth-year star Jalen Pitre.
The Texans’ defense expects to be one of he best in the NFL this season, featuring star rushers Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson, as well as a secondary that includes superstar cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and second-year stars Kamari Lassiter and Calen Bullock.
