The Summer of Shedeur
On the third day of the 2025 NFL Draft, the big story was the University of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders son of NFL Hall of Famer Deon Sanders was yet to be drafted. This despite Sanders having a first or second round grade as an NFL draft prospect. Rumors circulated as to why this was happening, and it didn’t matter the accuracy of the said rumors. In the 5th round and with the 144th pick of the 2025 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns finally took Shedeur Sanders off the board and he became a Cleveland Brown. With that pick came more theories and questions regarding the events of the day.
Cleveland Browns General Manager made the pick despite singing free agent Joe Flacco, trading for Kenny Pickett and drafting Dillon Gabriel in the 3rd round of the very same draft. What Berry and the Browns saw in the 5th round was value in the pick of the Colorado quarterback. Since becoming a Cleveland Brown Shedeur has said and done the right things in Cleveland. His lack of preparation was rumored to be a concern of the New York Giants. Other unsubstantiated stories circulated during the draft about his father meddling and the media circus that will follow him after the draft. That has yet to happen in Cleveland.
Because of injuries and rest of Joe Flacco, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders had the opportunity to start at the Carolina Panthers last Friday night in week 1 of the NFL Preseason. He did a good job overall as a starter. Sanders went 14-23 for 138 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. His quarterback rating was 106.8. Cleveland Browns fans excitement has been growing since the draft for the young quarterback. This excitement is dubbing the 2025 training camp and preseason the Summer of Shedeur. My take and opinion for what it’s worth is to pump the brakes on making Shedeur Sanders the franchise quarterback. It’s great to be excited and optimistic about the future. But we must also learn from the past. And history has shown disaster on rushing a young quarterback before he is ready. And Cleveland Browns fans know a disaster when they see it.
