Top Jaguars Performers in Preseason Week 3
The Jacksonville Jaguars concluded their preseason on the road in a 14-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins. With that in mind, it has been mentioned before that preseason football in the NFL is kind of like an episode of the hit comedy show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. Because it’s where the rosters are made up and the points don’t matter. However, maybe tonight it should be called “Whose ON the Line Anyway?” as several players with their spots on the line were playing to assert themselves to make it past final cuts on Tuesday. Here are some of the Jaguars who made the most compelling cases.
John Woolford, 3rd-string QB
You expect a rough start when you see backups come out facing your opponent’s starters. It gets worse when those backups on offense open with a sack allowed and a false start. Facing a 2nd and 24 while under duress once again in the backfield, Woolford hit Ja’Quinden Johnson for a checkdown for 10 yards (which would have been more if Austin Trammel hadn’t accidentally knocked him over). Seeing an opening while scanning the field, Woolford ran for 14 yards to set up a short plunge to move the chains on 4th and short.
On the next series in a 3rd and 11, Woolford came through again, finding Trenton Irwin, who had to ball bounced off his shoulder. It looked like Irwin didn’t see the ball coming. The sabotage continued on the next drive as a snap on 3rd and 1 sailed over Woolford’s head to end the next drive.
Woolford finished his night completing three of his five passes with as well as 25 rushing yards on four carries. Seth Hennigan took over for the rest of the game, where Miami played their backups throughout the rest of the night.
Jabar Muhammad, CB
With Miami playing their starting quarterback, Tua Tagavailoa, on offense to open the game, Muhammad’s coverage was part of the reason the ‘Phins were leading only 8-6 at the half. During the opening two three-and-outs with Tagavailoa at the helm for the Dolphins, Muhammad not only had a pass defended when he batted a ball on blitz, but he got Tua to change his throw on the next drive on another blitz for an incompletion that led to a Miami punt.
Not bad for an undrafted free agent out of Oregon.
Jack Kiser, LB

When Jacksonville drafted Kiser out of Notre Dame in the 4th round, he was meant to be part of the future of this franchise on defense. However, the future may be now as Kiser has finished strong in what has been an impressive preseason, recording four tackles with a sack and a tackle for a loss.
His contribution is part of the reason the Jaguars held Miami to convert only four of their 12 attempts on 3rd down.
